- In 1883, Ando Reizaburo founded "Hakuyaku Gakusha." In 1916, it became Hakuyaku Railway School, in 1925 Kagoshima Railway School, and in 1950, with the educational system reform, Kagoshima Railway High School. In 1960, it was renamed Kagoshima Commercial and Industrial High School, and in 1994 it became the current Shonan High School.

- Kendo Club
- In 1979, while at Kagoshima Shokō, they won the 26th Inter-High Men’s Team competition. They placed third in the 29th tournament in 1982. The school’s official website describes the Men’s Kendo Club as “one of the strongest in the prefecture,” with a slogan of “Conquer Yourself!” and a goal of winning the Inter-High. The Women’s Kendo Club won the National High School Selection Tournament in March 2025, reported as the first national championship for a team from Kagoshima Prefecture (Coach Kimata Masako). They will participate in both the Men’s Team and Women’s Team divisions in this tournament.

- Established in 1923 (Taisho 12) as Akashi Municipal Akashi Junior High School. In 1928, it was transferred to the prefecture and renamed Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Junior High School. Due to the educational system reform of 1948, it became Hyogo Prefectural Akashi High School and became coeducational. An art department was established in 1983, and a STEAM inquiry department/course was established in 2024.

- 和田奈槻 (3rd year) competed in the women's individual event at the 72nd National High School Kendo Tournament (National High School Championships) in August 2025, advancing to the 4th round (best 16). In the 2025 Hyogo Prefecture Inter-High qualifiers for the women's individual event, 和田奈槻 won the championship (defeating a player from Kakogawahigashi after overtime in the final). In 2007, the women's team competed in the individual event of the National Championships for two consecutive years.
