- Founded on November 13, 1889, by Tana Hashi Ichiro. Received approval as a junior high school in 1892, and the school building was completely destroyed by fire in 1896. The name was changed to its current form in 1919 along with a commercial school. Separated into junior and senior high school divisions with the 1947 new school system, and reorganized into a new system junior and senior high school in 1951. Became coeducational in 2010.

- Opened in Kumamoto City in 1909 (Meiji 42) as Luther Theological School. In 1911 (Meiji 44), it was authorized as Kyushugakuin, and Toshiyoshi Toyama became the first principal. It was renamed Kyushu Middle School in 1943, Kyushugakuin Middle School in 1946, and Kyushugakuin High School opened in 1948. It transitioned from an all-boys school to coeducation in 1991 (Heisei 3).

Also won the National High School Kendo Selection Tournament 11 times.
